Methadone Treatment

Each patient receives a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan that combines evidence-based behavioral therapy with medication-assisted treatment (MAT). One of the MAT options available at our clinic is liquid methadone.

Methadone is a long-acting opioid medication used in the treatment of opioid dependence, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid use. It works by stabilizing brain chemistry, reducing cravings, and preventing withdrawal symptoms. When administered and monitored within a licensed treatment program, methadone is a safe and highly effective treatment.

Methadone treatment typically begins with daily clinic dosing, along with the opportunity to earn take-home doses over time based on demonstrated stability, safety, and program compliance. This structured approach supports both patient safety and long-term recovery.

Research consistently shows that patients who remain engaged in methadone treatment experience significant improvements in health, functioning, and quality of life. Participation in treatment is associated with reduced illicit opioid use, decreased overdose risk, and fewer high-risk behaviors.

Clinical guidance from national addiction authorities recommends sustained participation in treatment, as longer durations are strongly linked to better outcomes. While treatment length varies by individual, many patients benefit from extended or long-term maintenance.

For safety, methadone should not be combined with alcohol, non-prescribed opioids, or sedating substances, as this can increase the risk of serious respiratory depression and other complications. Methadone is most effective and safest when taken exactly as prescribed under medical supervision.

Patients should always follow clinic guidance, inform healthcare providers of their treatment, and consider carrying a medical information card. We also strongly encourage access to naloxone (Narcan), a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdose in an emergency.
